Welcome BODY HAMMER, the second standalone collection of works by german designer and artist UGLYBLACKWORK. Mainly known for his designing duties for household names such as Amenra, Portrayal of Guilt, Full of Hell and many of the artists from the INDUSTRIAL NRW collective, UGLYBLACKWORK is also a devout disciple of weird cinema, with a special gusto for classic japanese cyberpunk and body horror.
This Zine, which lends its title from the 1992 genre classic Tetsuo II: Body Hammer, leans obsessively into the ideas and aesthetics of cryptic mutations, degredation, technology and body horror, casting a light onto the ugly face of the modern industrialized world and its increasing degree of bewildering transhumanism.
BODY HAMMER spans 32 pages of meticuously crafted collages in the signature style of UGLYBLACKWORK, yet elevated by an increased degree of visual grittiness and a coherent concept gathered from all across the genre’s pantheon: Anatomia Extinction, 964 Pinoccio, Akira, Ghost in the Shell and of course the Tetsuo movies by Shinya Tsukamoto.
Broken bodies appear as elevated, even more so desecrated, merged together with circuits and machine parts, accompanied by calls for destruction and renewal. Symbols of control and depictions of decay are altogether drowned out in pure granular filth.
BODY HAMMER is a loveletter to a very personal obsession, but at the same time in possession of a powerful allegorical quality.
